For the first time in club history, the Western New York Flash won the National Women’s Soccer League Championship by defeating the Washington Spirit 3-2 in penalty kicks. The spirit was favored as the No. 2 seed but had to deal with the confidence the Flash obtained after their 4-3 upset win over No.1 seed Portland in the semifinals.
The Spirit’s Crystal Dunn set the stage by putting her team in the lead just nine minutes in, but the team wouldn’t see the net for the rest of the night. They entered with an 8-0-0 record and there wasn’t a doubt they would reign victorious. What no one was expecting was Lynn Williams to send the game to penalty kicks.
Sabrina D’Angelo, the flash’s goalkeeper, was able to fend off 3 kicks to her net, making her team champions and earning herself MVP of the match.
